Description

M31. The Andromeda Galaxy. I ended up re-shooting this due to some really strange gradients I couldn't solve with the original data. I think it ended up being a winner! About 6 hours worth of data. SynL-RGB.

M31 was at the center of the debate as to how large our universe really was. Initially, it was believed that Andromeda was a nebulae and lived within the Milky Way. However, Edwin Hubble used a Cepheid Variable star to determine it's rough distance based on its brightness change over time. Given that we knew how bright the star was, we could finally determine that M31 was actually an external object. With this discovery, Hubble ushered in a new era of astrophysics.
