Description

NGC7139 is a tiny planetary nebula in the pentagon of Cepheus. This kind of objects represents a luminous shell of gas ejected by a late type star in its Red Giant stage of evolution. When the star was unstable in its post-main sequence phase, an increase in energy generation caused the star to expand beyond its state of balance; it overshot and then contracted again. The contraction heated the interior, increased the rate of energy generation and initiated a new expansion. These "thermal pulses" eventually eject an expanding shell of unconsumed hydrogen, and when this hydrogen is stimulated the emission that gives rise to this phenomenon starts. Estimated distance is 4300 light years. [Astronomy Picture of the Month, 2004]

Processing was done with PixInsight, following (for the most part) kayronjm's tutorial of Feb. 24th. Only Ha was used to develop the Luminance image. Ha, OIII and SII narrow band filters were collected for the color mix.

The image was captured with the venerable Meade 12"LX200, using the Atik 383L+ mono at F7.16 (i.e. 2182mm FL). All subs (except Ha) were taken at 1x1 bin, -10C, and 10 minutes each. Ha was taken at both 10 minutes and 30 minutes.

Image --

Ha - 600s : 16 subs (2.67 hr) on Sep 6th and 7th.

Ha - 1800s: 11 subs (5.50 hr) on Sep 12th and 13th.

OIII- 600s : 23 subs (3.83 hr) on Sep 6th and 7th.

SII - 600s : 19 subs (5.17 hr) on Sep 6th and 7th.

Color mix for the image was done with only the narrow band filters:

Red = 75%Ha+25%SII, Green = 15%Ha+85%OIII, Blue = OIII

North is up, and this is a medium crop due to the target's small size.
