Description

M33 - The Triangulum Galaxy

So, this is my follow-up to my last galaxy, the ever-popular Andromeda (M31).

In the universe, there's tons of galaxies....and they live in groups. The group that the Milky Way and Andromeda live in is called the Local Group of Galaxies, which has those two, plus this one, known as the Triangulum Galaxy (or M33).

The Triangulum Galaxy lies in the constellation Triangulum (which, not suprisingly looks like a right triangle), and is found below the constellation Andromeda. If you look at that area of the sky, the galaxies Andromeda and Triangulum lie about equal distances away from Mirach (the really awesome, bright red star in the center of the constellation Andromeda). Of the 3 major galaxies in the Local Group (and there's about 54 total...most of them being dwarf galaxies or satellite galaxies like the Large and Small Magellanic clouds for the Milky Way and M32/M110 for Andromeda), the Triangulum is the smallest.

It lives a bit more than 2.5 million (!!!!) light years away, and has a diameter of 60,000 light years. It contains approximately 40 billion stars, where the Milky Way has approximately 400 billion and Andromeda has approximately a trillion (!)

It is spiral in structure, but not as organized as Andromeda or the Milky Way. There are numerous star forming regions in Triangulum, which look like the brighter spots in the photos (and they would equate to say, the Orion nebula in our night sky).
