Description

The Elephant's Trunk nebula is a set of interstellar dust and clouds in Cepheus, where it is part of a larger network of ionized gas (IC1396). The trunk itself is illuminated by a large star (HD 206267 - to the right in this image), and the entire gas region is ionized by it. It sits about 2,400 light years from us.

I had a great time pulling down so much Ha data on this. Had to deal with some gnarly star halos in the process, but all-in-all, this is probably my favorite image to-date.
