Description

North is to the right in this image. Central in this image is the emission / reflection nebula structure whose parts are separately cataloged NGC 6992, NGC 6995, and IC 1340. This image shows part of a larger object that is a supernova remnant. The super nova remnant is sometimes referred to as the Cygnus Loop. The supernova was estimated to have exploded about 5,000 to 8,000 years ago, The supernova remnant was historically estimated to be about 2,600 light years distant from Earth. However, more recent estimate propose a distance of from 1,470 to 1,880. Strong evidence for the shorter distance comes form studies from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) which showed the star KPD 2055+3111 to be behind the super nova remnant and at a distance of about 1,880 light years There is not much else in this field but there is a recognizable background galaxy (2MFGC 15860) just above the central portion of NGC 6992. These objects and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image. Horizontal FOV is 85'
