Description

I've been working on a lot of brighter stuff and I decided to go after something a bit fainter, more difficult, and more interesting. I love barred spirals and NGC 1530 fit the ticket. It's about 115 MLy distant and with an apparent magnitude of about 11.5 so it's pretty faint. The real challenge is that the surface brightness is only about 22.89 mag/arc-sec^2. I spent five nights earlier this month working on this one and battled a lot of seeing issues both in the sky and with tube currents. It was still pretty warm as well so the dark noise in my 6D wasn't as low as I'd like. I started out with 10 minute exposure and quickly went to 12 minutes for the first two nights. For the last three nights, I increased the exposures to 20 minutes, which got the sky fog about 15% off the background on the BOC histogram. I trashed myself for 5 nights and still only produced 12 hours of usable subs. All of the lost data was due to poor seeing, passing clouds (on night #1) or stray light--none was lost to guiding. I found this data to be extremely hard to process and I've spent three days on it. It's finally time to set it free to see what you guys think. It's not quite what I had in mind when I started but it's probably close to the limit of what I can produce given the quality of the data. C&CC always welcome. Enjoy...

John
