Description

The region of space containing NGC 7635 emits a fascinating pattern of fluorescence in the H-alpha and OIII bands, as well as a little in the SII. At ~11,000 light years away from Earth, the region presents a cloud of ionized gas with a central balloon roughly 10 light years across formed by the stellar winds emanating from a massive hot, young star. The highly-kinetic expansion forms an elongated spherical boundary of ionized gas against a backdrop of a larger, diffuse hydrogen alpha emission nebula. The oval-shaped structure resembles a bubble, complete with the optical effects of refraction and surface reflection and produces an image with mysterious appeal.

The coloring in this image was done with an adaptation of a procedure presented by Starizona at http://starizona.com/acb/ccd/software/ps_morenarrow.aspx
