Description

This image shows the lunar central highlands.

The largest crater is Ptolemaeus -- about 93 miles wide.

The US probe Ranger 9 crashed into Alphonsus, the crater below Ptolemaeus in March, 1965 after a successful photography mission.

The area is very old so it shows a lot of variety: catenae, rilles, and irregular craters. The feature "Straight Wall" is on the lower left.
