Description

Taurus is composed of two main groups of stars; the Pleiades (Messier 45) and Hyades (Melotte 25). The Seven Sisters is among the nearest clusters to Earth and is dominated by hot blue luminous stars that form reflection nebulosity in faint dust. Through the dust to the V shaped head of the bull in Taurus, the Hyades consists of a spherical group of hundreds of stars about 153 light years distant. The bright red giant, Alderbaran, is unrelated to the Hyades and it lies along the same line of sight, but much closer to Earth. The Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC) makes up much of this area, composed of a large dense area of gas and dust in space made mostly of molecular hydrogen and helium.
