Description

The Eastern Veil Nebula (NGC 6992)

Took this with a DSLR and a refractor riding on an equatorial telescope mount (Celestron CGEM DX). This is part of a massive supernova remnant that's in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. It is estimated to be just under 1500 light years away and 50 light years across. It was discovered on September 5, 1784 by Sir William Herchel while our fledgling democracy was sorting out the details of its newfound independence on the other side of the pond.
