Description

From very early days in 2006 this is NGC 4449 is a very blue Irregular Galaxy with a complex distribution of H II regions and undergoing considerable active star formation. It is a member of the very nearby galaxy group including NGC 4144, NGC 4190, NGC 4214, NGC 4244, IC 4182. A rough distance estimate for NGC 4449is 11 million light years. At that distance the diameter would be 19,600 light years. It has a magnitude of 9.4 and a high surface brightness of 12.3 mag/square arcmin. Its angular size is about 5' x 4'. Visually it is a quite striking 'square' object.
