Description

April 2006:

Just as we get a few clear nights along comes the moon to spoil the fun. But before the moon got too bright I managed to get some shots of M106 in that great area of sky just below Ursa Major, which is well placed for observing now at around midnight.

M106, a type Sb spiral galaxy, is quite close at around 25 million light years distant, so it is pretty bright, mag 8.4 and big, about 20 x 10 arc min. My image was taken on the nights of 2nd and 3rd April from about midnight till 3am, each night.

I took 40 x 60 second exposures and had to reject about 6 or so due to trailing from my mount. The remainder were processed in Astroart and adjusted in Image Editor for colour, black point, etc.

I also got some interesting data from several other galaxies in the same local area as M106 - which I'm still trying to get some decent pictures from. There is plenty to choose from in this area, that's for sure!

Here's M106.
