Description

Another from 2006!

Got out last night and hunted down ngc 4656. I got the impression the night was quite good, the stars were quite small for a change. I took 60 x 1minute exposures of ngc 4656 and had to reject only 4, so it was a good night.

NGC 4656 is really close to ngc 4631 and the tidal distortion is quite evident. In fact, ngc 4631 is just out of the field of view to the upper right and it is clearly causing a lot of problems with the bottom half of 4656. The little galaxy right at the top left hand edge of 4656 is ngc 4657 (mag. 10.6)-clearly interacting strongly with 4656.

I added the 56 exposures in Astroart and split the red channel out. The stars in the red channel were bloated - probably because I don't use an IR filter - so I did a deconvolution on the red channel which reduced their size a bit. Added the red back in and did some sharpening on the luminence channel plus a bit of noise reduction in NEAT Image (brilliant programme). The final image is still noisy; I suppose that's because I was trying to get some detail out of the bottom half of the galaxy which is only barely above sky background.

Reminds me of Concorde landing!
