Description

M31 (The Andromeda Galaxy)

Andromeda is the nearest spiral galaxy to our galaxy the Milky Way. It is about 2.3 million light years away and is on a collision course with us. While it is visually the largest galaxy in our local group, recent estimates show that the Milky Way may have more dark matter and therefor may contain around the same overall mass. Andromeda is estimated to have around 1 trillion stars vs. the Milky Way's 400 billion. At a really dark location the core of Andromeda can be seen with the naked eyes. If you could see the entirety of the galaxies it would appear 6 times larger than then moon as it covers about 3 degrees of the sky.

This particular image is a 4 panel mosaic. Also visible in this shot are two dwarf satellite galaxies of Andromeda, M32 & M101.
