IC 63, "Ghost of Cassiopeia," HαRGB, 30 Nov & 1 Dec 2015

I wanted to take a bit wider-field view of the “Ghost of Cassiopeia” γ Cassiopeia Nebula, and wanted to try it in HαRRGB. Both nights of acquisition were quite cold and relatively clear. I first acquired the Hα data; something went wrong and froze the cameras after I went to bed, so I got less data than I had planned. I got started a little late on the second night so actually began after the meridian flip. I got lots of data, but tossed the latter subs because Provo, Utah’s light dome interfered too much. I ended up not mixing in any of the R channel from the RGB because the result looked better to me using pure Hα for the R channel. Overall, the nebula showed up pretty well in these images, but γ Cas is overwhelming. I messed with the colors to try to get something I liked but I’m still not quite satisfied; getting good colors in these images is still quite challenging for me.

Scope: Orion ST-80+Antares 0.5x focal reducer

Filter: Baader 7 nm Hα, Baader UHC-S (for RGB)

Mount: CG-5 (Synta motors, PicGoto Simplificado)

Guiding: 9x50 mm finder/guider + DSI Ic + PHD 2.5.0.7 (Win 7 ASCOM)

Camera: DSI IIc, no chiller CCD -3 °C

Acquisition: Nebulosity 4.0.3, no dither

Exposure: 17x900 s (Hα), 30x600 s (RGB)

Stacking: Hα: Neb 4, bad pixel map, bias included, no flats, extract R channel, match histograms, square, trans+rot align, DSS 2x drizzle 1.75 average κ-σ stack. RGB: bad pixel map, bias included, 33 flats, match histograms, de-Bayer & square, trans+rot align, DSS 2x drizzle 1.75 average κ-σ stack

Processing: StarTools 1.4.305 + CS6 Astronomy Tools.
