Description

This image is only a small portion of the Pelican Nebula (the head and neck area). This is a false color palette developed by NASA. The Hubble Palette maps Hydrogen gases (prominent) to green, Sulfur to red and Oxygen gases to blue. Viewed with the human eye, this region would appear as shades of red. The "ridge" at image center is approximately 10 light years in distance (5.87849981 × 10^13 miles). This nebula has a very active star forming region as is evidenced by the ionized (glowing) gases along ridge.

The Pelican Nebula is some 2,000 light years distant and is found in the constellation Cygnus.
