Description

I have found doing tone mapping with Photoshop challenging to say the least. This was processed mostly in Pixinsight (PI) using Rick Stevenson's ColorMask script. I did have to go outside PI a bit, but total processing was less than an hour.

Basically the strategy was to destar the NB images, form an RGB image, tone map using Rick's script to get the colors desired, stretch the Ha image to form the L of the LRGB, then put the stars back.

This is the workflow:

1. Stretch SHO and make 3 histograms similar in PI

2. Remove stars from 3 SHO images using Straton (clean residua in Photoshop using Healing tool)

3. Combine to one SHO image in Pixelmath using standard Hubble Pallet (H=G; O=B; S=R)

4. To get Gold/Blue from Hubble Pallet (Using ColorMask) in Pixinsight (see Rick's tutorial)

4a. Magenta Mask, desaturate twice (I think this is only needed if you have magenta stars)

4b. Green Mask, reduce green slightly

4c. Cyan Mask, boost B & R, reduce G, saturate

4d. Yellow Mask, boost R

5. Blur RGB for smooth colors with AWT in Pixinsight

6. Stretch destared H using LHE shamelessly

7. AIP LRGB script with NR = 3 for detail

8. Get stars from Straton subtracting reference image from destared image in Straton (see Tools)

9. Add stars back to #7 with PixelMath in PI
