IC1305 - A Gazillion Stars

A wide field view of IC305... hmm... I see the body of Sagitta, but which thing, or where, or what, is IC-1305? FOV is roughly 7 x 10 deg.

The camera is red-challenged, and normally I'd boost the low-level red channel a bit. But here we see a red nebula near the top, so if red were present we'd expect to see more of that. So I won't retouch this image at all.

This is a region of the Milky Way where the bright band splits apart, revealing dark channels.

Many years ago we caught a Nova in this region in the Infrared. We discovered, along with others, that about half the novae, about 100 days after outbreak, almost instantly produce a graphite or slicate shell surrounding the central star as the expanding gas and dust cool sufficiently. Silicates leave a distinctive spectral feature between 10-20 micron wavelength.

After seeing from this image just how many stars are in that region, it isn't surprising that novae are common here.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
