Description

The Horsehead nebula is a dark nebula, composed of gas and dust which is obscuring the view of the brighter region behind it, which is a region of gases, dominated by hydrogen, which is emitting light due to its energisation by the nearby bright star sigma Orionis (which is out of the picture).

The nebula is about 1500 light years away and was discovered in 1888 on a photographic plate.

Description: Reprocessed old data again. The poor collimation of the scope shows up quite clearly in this image, and furthermore, there are some artefacts which look like they are caused by stray light, probably from the nearby Alnitak.
