Description

This is a luminance image of M106, a spiral galaxy located 25 million light years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. M106 is part of the 10% of galaxies that are classed as Seyfert galaxies, of which it is one of the closest. They are some of the most intensively studied objects in astronomy, characterized as large with a high surface brightness and a quasar-like nuclei. They also have supermassive black hole at their center surrounded by an accretion disk of material falling in.

Also in this image to the right is the edge on spiral NGC 4217 at 60 million light years out. Dozens of other more distant galaxies are also visible.

First time trying half hour exposures, went better than expected! Wiggle room for improvement though.
