Description

One of the brightest galaxies in the southern sky, it is characterised by a bright core of old stars, dust lanes and spiral arms defined by clouds of young blue stars and star-forming emission regions. These give a distinct impression of dynamic action. M83 is remarkable that four supernovae have been recorded in the past century - an object worthy of a nightly observation for potential supernova discovery. Distance: 10Mly. How many more distant galaxies can you find?
