Description

This companion to Bode’s Galaxy has become misshapen due to gravity forces. The disturbance has also triggered a wave of wave of rapid star formation resulting in M82's unusual form. A supernova in this galaxy appeared to us in January of 2014 (light having traveled for millions of years since the event really occurred). The supernova is marked with a small red line in this image.

M82 lies 12 million light years distant beyond our Milky Way

This image was captured under high desert skies near Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.
