Description

In December I had a go at M42 (posted here) but the sky was rather hazy with flickering stars and unclear Milky Way. Night before yesterday I finally had another chance, with a considerably clearer sky. What a difference that made to sharpness and star size!

Sadly I spent days trying to improve the old one while clouds or moon were in the way of more data (but I guess I learned a bit more about processing). In any case, I am quite satisfied with the M42 data I have now and will go for new targets next time it clears up. Taken with an Explore Scientific ED127 with 0.79 x TS Photoline reducer and a Canon 60Da at ISO 1600. 25 x 3 min (plus 10 x 15s and 10 x 5 s to save the core). No darks (it was -14 °C so a frosty camera with very little noise). On a NEQ6 with finderguider.

While I wait for more clear nights I am sure I will have a few more attempts at processing it and also do the Rosette Nebula I caught the same night.
