Description

The Great Nebula in Orion (or, M42, M43, and NGC 1973/1975/1977)

This photo is the entirety of Orion's Sword, containing many spectacular deep sky objects.

Orion is one of my favorite areas in the sky. It is a giant stellar nursery, located approximately 1500 light years from Earth, and is approximately 30-40 light years wide. It is one of only 2 nebula in the sky visible to the naked eye in the Northern Hemisphere (the other being M8 or the Lagoon Nebula in the constellation Sagittarius in the summer sky).

Observations of the Orion Nebula show that there are approximately 700 stars being formed in it at the current time. Orion is also characterized as an emission nebula, which means that much of its reddish/pinkish color is due to the ionization of hydrogen gas due to the massive stars, which then gives off the characteristic color.

The other thing that you can see in this shot is NGC 1973/1975/1977, also known as the Running Man Nebula. It is a reflection nebula, meaning the color and shape is due to reflections of the color and light from the stars within, unlike the Orion Nebula.
