Description

This object is a rarely imaged nearby edge-on galaxy located only 4 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -26 degrees. The galaxy spans almost 20 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of about 25,000 light years.

It has been debated whether this galaxy is an irregular galaxy or a small spiral galaxy, although it seems to be irregular to me based on its visually loose structure and small size.

The intense blue cast to most of the disk suggests recent star formation. Looking carefully, you will see that the disk is slightly warped, indicating some possible interaction with a nearby object. This object has been speculated to be the Antlia dwarf galaxy (PGC 29194), which is about 1.5 degrees to the south and out of this FOV.
