Was discovered by Johann Bode in the late 1700s. Just a few years later, it was discovered by Messier and added to his catalog. Bode also was involved in the discovery of Uranus and proposed the name.

I may take another stab at this one later. I wasn't too happy with how the stars looked, but I was doing everything I could to bring out the detail in the galaxies.
If I had framed it a little better, I could've gotten the Coddington galaxy which was just BARELY out of the field of view. I could actually see it on some of the individual frames, but there were too many frames where it was not visible, so I couldn't include it in the final shot.
