Description

The Horsehead Nebula

This area of Orion (his belt) is decidedly not a strong point for me, as my equipment (specifically my camera) isn't set up to handle the amount of hydrogen that's in the area, which makes it VERY hard to get all the red/magenta color that SHOULD be there...but, last night was gorgeous, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Usually, you need a ton of time to capture this, but I got about 90 minutes worth before the clouds rolled in.

If you look at Orion, the belt is where you find this. The super bright star is Alnitak, which also helps locate the Flame nebula (below it). The star Sigma Orionis can be seen at the very top right as just an edge on the top of the frame. This is the star responsible for illuminating the hydrogen gas near the Horsehead.

The Horsehead is an active star formation region in the sky.
