Discussing stereo astrophotography with Dr Brian May at Astrofest 2016

Description

Brian May has just taken a snapshot of my tablet showing my first successful 3D Earth bound view of a comet - with proper depth - (see this image (relaxed eyes) or this image (crossed eyes)). He gave it a huge thumbs up. Brian has created 3D comet images with Greg Parker's and others images for the stereo card sets his publishing company* produces.

Later in the day Brian gave a fantastic presentation on the history of 3D astrophotography from early Victorian times right up to the very recent New Horizons Pluto encounter. To top off the show we had a detailed high resolution 3D fly-over of the ice mountains of Pluto using the new Omega 3D projection system**. The Pluto 3D film was brought to the meeting by John Spencer of the New Horizons team. It was shown twice because it was that good!

(** quoting the Omega site: "this uses optical comb filter technology to split the entire visible spectrum into two discrete full color images. Each eye receives full color and equal energy. Very high extinction ratios are achieved, even when viewing the screen from extreme angles.")
