Description

I finally got around to "finishing" this image by collecting the remaining RGB frames a couple nights ago. Seeing was as terrible as I've ever seen it (not to mention brutally cold). Luckily I was mostly shooting color so the impact was negligible. I did collect almost 3 more Luminance hours but it was just plain bad with a FWHM almost double the original frames. The seeing wasn't so great the first night out, so I'm sure there's a bit more resolution I could still squeak out of this system. Regardless, I combined the RGB with only the original L subs and you get what you see right here. The color is very subtle in most of the areas of these galaxies which is pretty cool in it's own right.

I decided to upload this as a separate image since I think the "luminance only" seems to stand on its own pretty well. Enjoy!

Rev A - Original L, Added RGB

Rev B - Increased contrast, which to my eye makes for a more pleasing version. But, you can draw your own conclusion, I suppose.

Rev C - I've been getting several queries about what the raw data from the camera looks like so here's a look at the 39 luminance frames (scaled to 50% due to smooth playback) complete with an asteroid capture seen moving between NGC3166 and 3169:
