Description

Galaxies in Leo. A picture 1.3 degrees across of our spring night sky.

Here's one of three images I took on the nights of 3-4 and 3-5 2016 (last weekend) from Haleakala summit (Haleakala amateur astronomers facility, Henry Weiland, Alex Dzierba, Steve McGee, Stanley Truitt, thanks you guys, Henry, wish you were there man).

On the upper left is Galaxy ngc 3593. On the lower right you can see the Leo trio.

The Leo Triplet (also known as the M66 Group) is a small group of galaxies about 35 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. This galaxy group consists of the spiral galaxies M65, M66, and NGC 3628 (wiki).

An interesting feature showed up on the images. It is a faint tidal tail coming from ngc 3628 (Galaxy at the bottom right of the image). There are many galaxies with these tails. This tail, is a string of stars that extends approx 300 thousand light years from its host! Tidal tails are created from interactions with other galaxies.

Also if you look very closely you can see more than three dozen small, faint and fuzzy galaxies littered throughout the field.

Aloha.
