Description

M64, known also as the Black Eye Galaxy, is seen in the direction of the Constellation Coma Berenices about 17 Million Light-Years distant. Known as the Black Eye Galaxy owing to the dense, dark dust lanes near the core, which hide heavy star formation probably resulting from a past merger with another galaxy. The main core of the dust cloud is thought to be about 40,000 light-years in diameter, and rotates opposite the outer portions of the galaxy, also resulting from the encounter with the absorbed galaxy.
