Description

I’ve been thinking of imaging this framing for several months after I got my AT65EDT. NGC 2936, the “Porpoise Galaxy” is in the lower left and is approximately 300 million light years away. NGC 3077 is in the upper left and 12.8 million light years from us. M 81 and 82, the most famous pair of this group is somewhere between 11.5 and 12.5 million light years away.

This is the first time out with the AT65EDQ and I really like it. I was working on using the 50mm guide scope to guide but just wasn’t happy with the results I was getting. My lovely wife got me the Orion Thin Off Axis Guider for Christmas and I hadn’t had much time to set it up. Since I was learning the new OTA anyway I figured I may as well just dive in and get it all over with. After a few fitful starts the guiding improved more than I had expected it would. The final night was all OAG and I don’t think I’ll ever go back.

This was a real challenge. The weather has not been the best and when it was clear, you guessed it, the moon was out. I’m not that thrilled with the color in M81 but I’ll probably tinker with that in the next few days. If the weather and time allows, I would like to revisit this grouping and hopefully add more integration time to it.
