Description

M94 is a nearby galaxy (16 million light years) appearing in Canes Venatici. The system displays what appears to be a detached outer ring, but at IR and UV wavelengths, this “ring” is revealed to have a more regular spiral structure. another unusual feature of M94 include an unexplained lack of dark matter.

This image was captured under high desert skies near Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA with a telescope of 12" aperture at f/8 and an electrically-cooled CCD camera. Total exposure was 200 minutes (LRGB).
