Description

Another one of the on-the-beaten-path-objects that has eluded me for years. The web is abundant with good versions of the Pleiades, and for a good reason. The cluster is absolutely beautiful and the combination of strong stars and faint dust makes for a processing challenge. While I was shooting red and green for this image, the asteroid 838 Seraphina was crossing the field of view, it can be seen as two separate streaks in the lower part of the image, slightly left of the middle and to the right of star 26 Tauri. 838 Seraphina is a main belt asteroide with a visual magnitude of +14,2. It is 60 km in diameter and was approx 15 light minutes away at the time of exposure (1,77 AU), with an orbital periode of 4,93 years. It was discovered in 1916 by Max Wolf.
