Description

M83 (also known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy or NGC5236) is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation of Hydra. It is approximately 15 million light-years away, receding at more than 300km/sec. Like the Milky Way, it contains a super massive black hole in its nucleus, but is less than half the size of our Milky Way Galaxy. Red knots in the spiral arms are diffuse gaseous nebulae where star formation is occurring.

North is to the left, East down.
