Description

NGC4631 Whale Galaxy

Despite a peaceful appearance, the Whale Galaxy contains an area of exploding supernovae that spew gas to its outer edges. The galaxy is 120,000 light-years across and is 25 million light-years from Earth. The "spout" of the whale is companion galaxy NGC4627. Straight above the spout at the very top is 2MASX J12420645+3245390, a dim galaxy not listed in any common catalog. North is at the top.
