Description

Apologies for my despicable light pollution. I dream of dark skies.... Not a very good effort, but it's too cool a target to pass up. Thanks for looking.

NGC 4565, also known as the Needle Galaxy, is an edge-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices, It lies about 40 million light-years away and is 185,000 light-years in diameter . The 10th magnitude galaxy is oriented perpendicular to our own Milky Way galaxy and is almost directly above the North Galactic Pole (in the same way Polaris is located above the Earth's North Pole). First spotted in 1785 by Sir William Herschel, it is one of the most famous examples of an edge-on spiral galaxy. [Source: adapted from Wikipedia]
