Description

My image of ngc 3319 shows a highly distorted barred spiral galaxy. Although reasonably close at 32 MLy and quite bright with an apparent magnitude of 11.1, it has a surface brightness of 23.28 and the outer regions are very dim.

NGC 3319 is rich in H I, with a gaseous bar and spiral features. Several large, low-density regions are present, and the H I spiral structure is distorted, especially in the south. However, the galaxy does not show the typical 'integral sign' shape of a warped system. There is a small system approximately 11 arcmin south of the center of NGC 3319, which is just out of the field of view of my image. A tidal interaction between this object and NGC 3319 is the most likely cause of the distorted spiral structure, the H I tail, and the velocity perturbations found in the southern half of the galaxy.
