Description

An oddly symmetrical pair of galaxies. One (NGC4618) appears to be just a "larger" and rotated version and mirror image of the other (NGC4625)!

The smaller NGC 4618 is actually larger than it looks here. If you look carefully you can see sections of the faint outer bluish spiral structure beyond the brighter inner portion of the galaxy. It just barely rises above the light pollution in my suburb. Someday I will take another stab at this galaxy pair from a dark sky site where the faint outer arms should pop into view fairly easily.

A couple of the brighter O-B association/HII regions in NGC4618 actually were so bright that they were given the separate index catalog designations IC3668 and IC3669.

The pair is 37 (NGC4618) and 41 (NGC2625) million light years away. The little galaxy between the two stars of the the image is which is a small spiral, LEDA/PGC 2177330, which is far behind at 360 million light years.

Each of the seven 8 minute exposures that went into this image were actually SharpCap created live-stacks of 240 two second exposures.
