Description

I shot 21 hours of Hydrogen Alpha data in an effort to bring out the numerous HII regions that populate the spiral arms of M33. In the final image processing, I separated large scale structures from the smaller scale structures and processed them independently before recombining them in the final image. I did this so that I could place emphasis on the shape of the spiral arms in the galaxy when processing the large scale structures. These tend to get lost in most deep images from the glow over the center of M33. I wanted the image to show the spiral structure in much the same way that I see it in the eyepiece in larger aperture telescopes.

I wanted to also include the sky around M33 for a little bit of context, so I shot this as a 2 frame mosaic. The final image after cropping is 14 megapixels.
