Description

Abell 35 in HaOIII. Abell 35, also known as Sh2-313, is a large low surface brightness planetary about 10 arc minutes in diameter located in the constellation Hydra. It is about 400 light years distant. The central star is a binary that consists of a G8 subgiant star (SAO 181201) and a white dwarf. The nebula was produced by the gas from the white dwarf. There is a prominent bow shock visible in the OIII band. However, more recent papers indicate that Abell 35 may not be a planetary nebula. It may be the interaction of the binary system with the interstellar medium, the strong wind from the fast rotating subgiant creating the bow shock and the hot white dwarf ionizing the ambient interstellar medium, mimicking a planetary (Zeigler, A&A, A109,2010, from Astrodon Imaging).
