Description

Had a couple of clear nights earlier last week and I decided to do some galaxy imaging. One of the targets I chose was NGC4565, an edge on spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices. I was reviewing some of the raw frames and found a star scooting across the frame. Turns out it’s asteroid Olympia, first discovered 110 years ago. According to Sky Safari, it was shining at magnitude 13.9 and 2.2AU away from Earth. It’s diameter is about 43km. These exposures were around 5 min apiece, showing about 1.5hrs of motion.

It’s pretty cool looking through these frames since there are some plane trails as well. We have four very different scales: the planes (probably ~10km away), asteroid Olympia (+300 million km), the field stars ( < 10000 ly) and NGC4565 (42 million ly).
