Description

NGC 6946 (Arp 29), the Fireworks Galaxy, is a 9th magnitude spiral galaxy on the border between Cygnus and Cepheus. Obscured by dust from our own galaxy, its spiral arms appear less blue than many other spiral galaxies as viewed from our location. NGC 6946 is also remarkable as a prolific producer of supernovae, with nine of them appearing in the past 100 years.

This image was obtained on two nights at two different locations. The seeing was excellent on the first night, so I spent most of my time on luminance. The first revision had only 12 minutes of RGB data because some clouds rolled in. The second revision has adequate RGB data and better processing.
