Description

A very large, ancient planetary nebula (13'x 9' and an estimated age of 150,000 yrs) in Cygnus. MWP=Motch-Werner-Pakull. The bright star is upsilon Cygni (mag 4.4). There is another faint and large planetary nebula to the SW (up is north) called Alves1 (AVL1 2009), size 270" [1]. The background contains faint Ha and Oiii clouds (there seems to be rather strong Oiii in the region). The Oiii front of the nebula, particularly the east and west "wings", and the northern edge, contains many interesting fine-scale structures. (the northern edge looks as if it was eroded.)

This image was taken at Granview CG in Inyo, CA, near another well-known Methuselah, the ancient bristlecone pine tree. Celestron 8SE+ Hyperstar 3 with an aperture mask (effective F/3). Over 5 nights of imaging between thunderstorms. Decent transparency+darkness, and excellent seeing (HFR for Oiii reached 0.95 at one point). Ha, Oiii, and Sii (Astrodon 5nm). Atik460ex (mono).

Ha 1min x 20 + 10min x 50

Oiii 1min x 20 + 10min x 37

Sii 1min x 20 + 10min x 18

CCD temp: -10 degC

Mount: Losmandy G11

Guiding scope+camera: Orion 50mm guidescope+SX Lodestar

Gremlins: collimation problem, short nights, clouds, rain, mirror shift/flop, mosquitos, too many drinks

Processed using Pixinsight, ImagesPlus, Adobe Photoshop Element
