Description

The appearance of the Moon changes daily with the sun illuminating the lunar surface from a different angle, as it moves around the Earth. A complete cycle takes 29 and a half days and is called the lunar month, lunation, synodical revolution or synodic period of the Moon. Starting at the New Moon can tell the age of the moon is the time in days since the last new moon, so the Moon shows about 30 different aspects, one for each day of the lunation.

Of course, the craters and its details are what really stands out in a telescope of any caliber. Are the craters that make the Moon as interesting to the casual observer. Each has a different characteristic and they change appearance as the light of the sun from one night to the other. In some craters these changes can be noted even after several hours. When a crater is near the terminator is the line between day and night on the Moon (or any planet), the sun is very low in the lunar sky. This low sun reveals the shadows and texture of the lunar surface in the same way it does on Earth at sunrise or sunset, the sun. Any small variation in surface elevations appear casting shadows. Lava channels, wrinkle ridges (tectonic features), surprising failures as Rupes Recta, and the crater Reiner Gamma with its mysterious characteristics of magnetic anomaly, lava channels collapsed, chains of craters caused by rebound of impact, just a little of some of the wonders to see. Terminator is the band that can be seen formations lunar domes and small craters low, for example. An observer may take several hours looking at the visible detail and identifying their names, or making drawings and photographs to capture what you see.
