Description

M8 also know as the Lagoon Nebula is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius discovered by Giovanni Hodierna before 1654 from the Kingdom of Sicily. With an apparent extension of 3 x 1.25 times the diameter of the full moon, is one of the finest and brightest stellar nursery regions in the sky about 5,200 light-years distant, in the direction of the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.

One of the remarkable features of the nebula is the presence of dark clouds known as Bok globules, collapsing clouds in process of forming new stars. Likewise contains the open cluster NGC 6530, a group of bright stars recently born. In the bottom right of the image can be seen the IC 4678 nebula, a cloud which reflects the bluish brightness of a near star.
