The supergiant star, Gamma Cygni, also known by its proper name, Sadr, lies in the center of the Northern Cross, a famous asterism in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. As shown in this widefield image, Sadr, is the very bright star (magnitude 2.2) in the center of a gorgeous celestial landscape that features a complex of stars, dark dust clouds, and bright diffuse nebulae all within the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy.

This view features the emission nebula IC 1318 that includes a long dark dust lane that divides it and hides a visually obscured star behind it that illuminates the surrounding diffuse nebulae that are most active in the Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) spectral region. Below and left of Gamma Cygni in this image is NGC 6910, which consists of a tight grouping of relatively young stars. Gamma Cygni is closer to us than the surrounding nebulosity, estimated to be some 800 to 1,800 light years distant, while the glowing nebulae in this region and NGC 6910 are estimated to be between 2,000 to 5,000 light years distant. A few stars visible in the dark dust lane are also closer to us than the dust lane itself.

This image consists of only a 1 hour integration of twenty (20) 180 second light frames and still shows lots of detail. It is a testimony to the advantage of having a fast optic such as the f/3.3 Takahashi Epsilon E-130D to capture such images in a relatively short time frame. Diffraction spikes associated with the brightest stars in this image have been enhanced slightly using Star Spikes by ProDigital Software making for a dramatic effect.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
