Description

The Veil nebula in the constellation Cygnus is a large supernova remnant, about 1400 light-years away from Earth. It's filamentous structure is a nice target for widefield telescopes, like my humble ST80 with 400 mm focal length.

I captured the eastern part of the nebula, whose brightest region is referred to as NGC 6992. In the orientation presented here, it somewhat resembles the profile of a human face. The Veil nebula is positioned near zenith during this time of the year, which is ideal for imaging from a light-polluted area. Also, the first quarter moon went below the horizon halfway through the imaging session.

While the camera was snapping pictures through the telescope, the Perseid meteor shower showed us lots of bright falling stars, truely spectacular.

Since this is a pretty faint target, I decided to go for two hours of integration time, the most I've spent on a single object so far. This area of the sky contains a large amount of stars, due to it's position in the Milky Way plane. Thus, the hardest part of post-processing was controlling the star bloat and color halos from chromatic aberration.

Rev. B was reworked with a better mask for the Life module in StarTools, different color calibration and with multiple masks for star size reduction.
