Description

The Bubble Nebula is an emission nebula some 7000-11000 light years away, in the constellation Cassiopeia. A massive star at the center of the bubble is emitting a fierce stellar wind of ionized gas that excites the inner layers of the nebula cloud, causing them to glow. The bubble itself is between 3 and 5 light years in diameter.

Also visible is the distinctive Lobster Claw Nebula (aka Sharpless 2-157), another bright emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. Just below the bottom pincer is NGC 7510, a small, young open star cluster in the constellation Cepheus, near the border of Cassiopeia. NGC 7538 (seen in the lower right) is an active star forming nebula that hosts the largest known protostar, NGC 7538S. The star hasn't finished forming but conditions are right for it to form into a high mass B star.
