Description

Bat Nebula, NGC 6995
See the bat? I don't... And I even rotated the image several times!
But, he haunts the eastern Veil Nebula. The Veil Nebula itself is a large supernova remnant, an expanding cloud of debris from the explosive death of a massive star. While the Veil is roughly circular in shape and spans nearly 3 degrees across the sky towards the constellation Swan, the Bat Nebula, NGC 6995, spans only 1/2 degree, roughly the apparent size of the Moon.
In the image, the emission of hydrogen atoms in the remnant is shown in red and an emission of oxygen atoms in shades of blue. Data captured on the night of the 24th and 25th of July 2022, at the back of the house.
